LATAM Launches Direct Cuenca-Galapagos Flights Starting March 31

Cuenca residents and expats will soon have a much easier path to the Galapagos Islands. LATAM Airlines announced a new route connecting Cuenca directly to Baltra Island, launching March 31, 2026.
No More Quito Layovers
Previously, Cuenca-based travelers had to fly to Quito or Guayaquil first, often requiring an overnight stay or long layover before catching a Galapagos-bound flight. The new route eliminates that hassle.
This is a game-changer for expats in Cuenca. The Galapagos has always been on everyone's bucket list, but the logistics were a barrier for many.

What This Means for Expats
The Galapagos Islands have long been a must-see destination, but many Cuenca expats postponed the trip due to inconvenient connections. With direct service:
- Weekend trips become feasible – Leave Saturday morning, return Tuesday afternoon
- No need to book Quito hotels for early morning departures
- Easier for visiting family – Guests can fly into Cuenca and add Galapagos without backtracking
Tips for Galapagos Travel
- Book 2-3 months ahead for best prices
- Don't forget the $100 Galapagos National Park entry fee (cash only at the airport)
- The $20 Transit Control Card is purchased before boarding
- Pack light – inter-island boats have limited luggage space
The Bigger Picture
This new route expands opportunities for both domestic and international tourism, confirming the potential of Cuenca as a regional hub. For years, the city has sought better air connectivity—this is a significant step forward.
